Nuclear Reactors Coming to Your Neighborhood

Presidential Executive Order 14299, titled Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security, advances nuclear energy to support national security and directs the installation of a nuclear reactor at a domestic military base by 2028. The order also directs the Secretary of Energy to designate one or more DOE sites for the use and development of nuclear reactor technology. Many of these efforts are already under way. These nuclear energy initiatives are expected to have significant implications for the communities surrounding the selected military and DOE sites, particularly with regard to energy infrastructure, safety, and economic development. A panel of leading experts from the federal and state governments and industry will discuss how nuclear energy can meet increased power demands, the site selection process, safety protocols, and the role of communities.
